Scott McTominay could start next week against Cagliari
Prior to his €30.50m move to Napoli this summer, midfielder Scott McTominay had a notable career at Manchester United after breaking into the first team under former manager José Mourinho in 2017. He was a product of the club’s famed youth academy, McTominay initially impressed with his work ethic, physicality, and versatility in midfield. Although primarily a defensive midfielder, he was deployed in more advanced roles, thanks to his tactical awareness and ability to drive forward with the ball.
McTominay’s early years saw him steadily grow in confidence and importance, particularly under former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær. His powerful displays in key matches, including performances against rivals like Manchester City, showcased his big-game temperament. One standout moment came in March 2020, when he scored a long-range goal in a 2-0 victory over Man City.
Despite some inconsistency, McTominay’s leadership qualities and commitment to Man United were widely recognized. He was often relied upon in high-intensity matches for his defensive work and energy.
In addition to his club duties, McTominay is a key player for the Scotland national team. While competition for midfield spots has grown under new managers, he continues to be an integral squad player with his passion and connection to Manchester United’s traditions.
Now that McTominay is a part of manager Antonio Conte’s side, everyone is wondering when he’ll make his first start. It looks like that could next weekend against Cagliari, according to Corierre del Mezzogiorno, via TuttoNapoli.
Aside from McTominay making his first appearance next week, we could also see Billy Gilmour hit the pitch for Napoli.
