Mario Rui could be on the way out
Napoli fullback Mario Rui has been a key figure in the club’s defense since joining them in 2017 from Roma. The Portuguese left-back was brought in by then-manager Maurizio Sarri, who had previously coached Rui at Empoli. Known for his technical ability, accurate crossing, and attacking contributions, Mario Rui quickly established himself as an important part of Napoli’s squad, particularly in their dynamic style of play.
In his early seasons, Rui alternated with Faouzi Ghoulam, but as Ghoulam struggled with injuries, Rui solidified his position as the first-choice left-back. His defensive work, combined with his ability to overlap and support Napoli’s attacking wingers, became vital under Sarri, Carlo Ancelotti, and Gennaro Gattuso.
One of Rui’s standout traits is his precise passing and set-piece delivery, which often creates goal-scoring opportunities for Napoli. Over the years, he has been integral to the club’s sustained challenge in Serie A and their deep runs in domestic cup competitions.
Despite some criticism for his defensive positioning at times, Rui’s consistency and professionalism have made him a respected figure among teammates and fans. By 2023, Mario Rui had become one of the longest-serving players at Napoli, contributing significantly to their successes, including their historic 2022-23 Serie A title.
With new manager Antonio Conte now in place at Napoli, it appears that Rui is not in his plans. So the veteran fullback will either need to find a new club or sit out most of or the entire season without playing any football. It now looks like there’s at least one option in the market for him.
Gianliuca Di Marzio of Sky Sports is reporting that Rui could be a last minute addition for Turkish side Galatasaray if they’re unable to bring in defender Nicola Zalewski from AS Roma.
With Rui now being 33 years-old, it makes sense for Napoli to move on from him. If a move is going to happen, it will need to be finalized prior to Friday’s Turkish Super Lig transfer deadline.
Update: Nicolo Schiro is reporting that Rui would prefer to stay at Napoli until the January transfer window. This is certainly an interesting decision given the fact that he wouldn’t play football for the next four months.
